A few years ago in a museum, this image of a dog in a tapestry caught my eye.
Something about him seemed so carefree and joyous, this little medieval dog immortalized forever with his tail wagging. I imagine he must have been a happy, friendly dog.
Somewhere, in one of my needlework books (I forget which but it might be Repertoire des motifs), I found a chart of a dog that reminded me of the tapestry dog. Not too long ago, I used it in a design that I plan to stitch, hopefully this year. Cave canem - beware of the dog - is a bit of a joke, since this dog seems so playful and gentle. I'll stitch it in red silk floss on a 28ct fabric, and perhaps make it into a little wallhanging.
